Clay Vikings Ride the Storm

A miniature clay longship pitches over sculpted storm waves as its cheerful Viking crew rows in unison, the bearded captain at the prow pointing ahead with a grin while a crewmate clings to the mast and another bails with a tiny bucket. Every figure is hand-modeled from matte plasticine: rust-red and ochre tunics with fingerprint-pressed folds, round clay noses, woolly beards of teased clay strands, horned helmets slightly crooked, stubby arms pulling hand-whittled oars; the captain's cloak is a real scrap of woven fabric snapping in the wind. The set is a layered little ocean: in the foreground a great curling wave of marbled teal clay crests with cotton-wool spray, a clay seal popping its head out of the foam; in the midground the longship itself, hull of bent wood strips, a striped fabric sail, wire rigging and a row of plain round shields in bright colors along the rail; in the background crooked clay cliffs, a tiny lighthouse with a rotating beam, and a painted slate-grey sky split by a jagged clay lightning bolt. Cold blue storm light washes the scene, broken by the warm sweep of the lighthouse beam and a lantern glowing amber at the stern. The camera sits low at wave height in a dramatic wide shot, the ship diagonal across the frame, deep focus from spray to cliffs. Every material is honestly handmade: matte clay, wood, fabric, wire and painted card.
