Ballerina on the Music Box

On the open lid of a wooden music box, an adult clay ballerina turns in a slow pirouette on the little rotating disc, arms curved gracefully overhead, one leg extended behind her, eyes closed in concentration as paper petals drift down around her. She is hand-modeled from matte peach and rose plasticine, her hair a dark clay bun with fingerprint-softened strands, facial features minimal and serene, her bodice painted clay and her tutu made from real layers of pale tulle fabric stiffened into a bell, satin ribbon pointe shoes with wire laces, her proportions slightly imperfect in the charming handmade way. The set builds a story around her: in the foreground the music box itself, real wood with a bent-wire crank and a mirror-foil inset in the lid reflecting her skirt; in the midground a miniature vanity table with a clay perfume bottle, hairbrush and a string of paper stars; in the background a tall window with gauze curtains billowing faintly, a painted night sky and clay crescent moon beyond, and a sleeping clay cat on a cushion below. Warm lamplight glows from the left while cool moonlight rims her silhouette from the window, and glitter dust hangs in the beams. The camera sits low, close to the lid, in a medium shot with shallow depth of field, the ballerina center frame and the room melting into softness behind her. Every material reads handmade: matte clay, real tulle, wood, foil and paper. A stop-motion clay animation still on a handcrafted miniature set, dreamy and tender, crisp clay texture with visible fingerprints, cinematic miniature photography.
